Dow Agro Sciences is a pioneer in the development of termite baiting systems and they recently trialled termite baiting “rods” which can last up to 5 years.
During the tests, stations were installed in the grounds surrounding a building which contained a piece of timber which was designed to attract termites into the station. Stations had to be regularly inspected by a licensed pest control and if live termites were found in a station a termite bait matrix was added to the station. Termite bait matrix is generally a cellulose based product which contains an insect growth regulator. Termites eat the cellulose and then the active ingredient is transferred back to the termite colony by feeding termites.
A number of other companies have similar systems which work in a similar way, however, recently Dow Agro Sciences launched a new product called Sentricon Always Active in which a timber previously inserted into the stations is replaced by a rod which is particularly durable and contains the active ingredient that can destroy the termite colony.
As such every station installed on the property is permanently active and the rods can last for up to 5 years. This means that less regular inspections are required which minimises the labour cost involved although the stations are more expensive than before. Nevertheless, the product it does give greater peace of mind to the homeowner as the stations which are placed at regular intervals surrounding the house have the continuous capacity to destroy a termite colony for a number of years. Even if regular checking of stations is discontinued, some protection would be still provided.
Although the product is relatively new on the market positive reports regarding its effectiveness have been received from pest control companies that have installed the product.
