New products are being developed all the time for the treatment of termites and also for the installation of termite protection programs. Termite baiting has been successfully used now for a number of years but one of the difficulties involved in successful termite baiting programs is that they have to be regularly monitored by a licensed pest control company.
This generally involves visits to the property by a licensed technician on approximately 6 weekly intervals and each time the technician comes he will examine inside the stations, apply bait matrix to any stations that are active with live termites, replace rotted or damage components of the stations and treat black ants that may be infesting them.
As this is labour-intensive it adds to the cost of the program over 12 monthly period. However, one company has developed a new rod that is impregnated with the active ingredient that can eradicate termite colonies. These rods can last for up to 5 years and as the stations require less maintenance visits to the property can be reduced to as little as three or four per year. As stations are located approximately 3 metre intervals around the house and as each station contains an active rod, it increases the likelihood of termites taking the bait. And even if the homeowner is unable to maintain the regular visits from a licensed technician at recommended intervals, it is still possible for this system to eradicate termites from long period of time.
Termite treated zones (formerly known as termite barriers) are also very effective at protecting houses and other buildings from termite attack. One of the problems in the past was that holes had to be drilled through concrete that abuts the external walls at 200 millimetre intervals. This of course was very labour-intensive, however, a new product is about to enter the market which not only provides excellent protection, but the hole spacings will be much greater than before. Whichever method is used by the client to protect their property, it is essential that regular timber pest inspections at no greater than 12 monthly intervals are carried out.
