One of the most dangerous spiders in Australia is the Funnel Web Spider. Many people think that it is confined to be Sydney area however they are also in other parts of Australia. All Care Pest and Termite Control have recently treated a school in the Benowa area on the Gold Coast where a Funnel Web Spider was found near classrooms. There are 30 species of Funnel Web spider in Australia.
If anyone is bitten they should seek urgent medical attention is the baits could be fatal.
These spiders usually have a black glossy head with very large fangs and thorax although the abdomen can be a dark brown colour. They are often confused with Mouse Spiders which are also found on the Gold Coast and are of similar appearance.
Mouse Spiders also have a glossy black head with large fangs as well and glossy black thorax although the abdomen is most commonly a grey or blueish colour. Also the thorax is somewhat shorter than that of the Funnel Web Spider. It should be pointed out that bites from the Mouse Spider can also be extremely dangerous although there is not a great deal of information about this as Mouse Spiders are relatively shy and bites are uncommon. Neither of these spiders produce what are regarded as normal spider webs as they live in tunnels that they excavate in the soil. These tunnels are capped with lids made of webs produced from the spider’s spinarets and they are not commonly seen as they usually only come out of the tunnels for mating or after heavy rain.
Funnel Web Spiders are particularly aggressive and if confronted will rise up in a striking position.
As most people will not be able to accurately identify the species of spiders that they see in their house or yard, it is essential that care be taken with any spider. It is important to call your local pest control company to arrange regular treatments of your property especially if spiders are present.
