Non-repellent products are key to eradicating pests

Pest control products used in Australia today must all be approved by the National Registration Authority which assesses their effectiveness as well is the safety. Products used in the treatment of general pests such as cockroaches, spiders, and ants frequently have different modes of action which may be specific for treating a particular pest.

For example, social insects such as ants are more effectively treated using what are known as “non-repellent products”. Up until recently ants were generally treated with general sprays which were developed to treat a wide range of insects, but there was often failure in eradicating social insects. Ants would be killed quickly on contact with a treated surface, but they were also able to detect the product on the surface and thereby avoid it. As such, they would be driven away from the area for a time but would only start infesting other nearby areas such as an adjacent room and once the product weakened over time they would return anyway.

The use “non-repellent products” meant that the ants would not be able to detect the treated surface, would be thereby contaminated and transfer the active ingredient back to the nest where nest destruction would often occur. This has significantly increase the success of ant treatments by the pest control industry although these products are generally unavailable to the public.

“Non-repellent products” are also used in the treatment of termites. Termidor Termiticide is a water based product that has little or no odour and is applied to soil around the perimeter of homes to provide long-term protection against termite infestation. Termites are also unaware of the product in the soil which allows them to be continually exposed causing a transfer effect in which the product contaminates and kills other termites within the colony.
