Many people’s properties have been affected by termite damage on the Gold Coast. When termites are discovered within a property it is usually a very stressful time for the owners. The first thing people want to do is to kill the termites immediately so they can stop causing damage but once the termites are removed and life returns to normal the thought still lingers that the termites may return at some point.
When termites are found attacking your house, it is always best to try to destroy the colony. The problem is that frequently the termite colony could be over 50 metres away and perhaps on someone else’s property, so in these circumstances we use special products that are designed to be taken back to the nest by the termites themselves.
These products are therefore non-repellent and are frequently applied by termite dusting, which is the application of a special powder that is blown over the termites so that they can be contaminated with it and then returned to the nest carrying the product. Termite baiting is also used to try and achieve the same result, however, the termite baiting stations containing the poison are attached to the area where the termites are infesting so that they can eat it and then also returned to the nest.
Whilst these measures are usually highly successful, there are variations involved such as the distance that the colony is from the house being attacked or even where there is a very large and complex colony involved success is not always achieved. Therefore greater protection can be provided by installing a termite management program. One of the most popular and successful of these is to install a termite barrier using Termidor Termiticide which is injected under the concrete around the house and applied to the soil against the external wall to create a continuous treated zone. Other chemicals are also available for this purpose but we have always found Termidor Termiticide to be the most successful.
Alternatively a termite baiting program can be installed in which stations are installed into the ground surrounding the house to act as silent sentinels. They are regularly monitored by the termite company and if termites are found to be present in them a bait matrix is added to the station so that it can be consumed and returned to the nest.
Costs for these protection programs can vary depending on the difficulty of the site or the size of the building to be protected. Nevertheless, these costs are small we considered against the possible damage that can be caused by termite infestation. Furthermore they provide peace of mind. Frequently people whose homes are the victim of a termite attack find that it is not only the expense of carrying out the repairs and the treatments that causes concern, but there is also a great deal of stress involved and as such termite protection programs are very valuable in providing this peace of mind.
